There's something about LOUD/CLOSE that rubs me the wrong way (besides that Tom Hanks' bizarre enunciation of his couldn't-be-hokier lines does not get less annoying with repeated exposure). Exploitative, manipulative. It's still "too soon" to use it as a hook, & I don't see that changing anytime soom. Somehow feels offensive in the same way that bothered so many people about SEVEN POUNDS.
But this makes me wonder: why do we complain against emotional manipulation, when that is the very point of movies (or any art), IMO (isn't it?)? Why are we so annoyed, why do we roll our eyes & huff, when it's in the form of, say, the song "Total Eclipse of the Heart"? Consider further cogitation.
