I can't believe it took me this long to figure out, but Alex Rodriguez and Anne Hathaway are the same. They're both people prodigiously gifted with things the current culture worships (their particular skills, their looks) who keep pretending they don't think so and that they don't deserve what comes their way because of it (the other things we most worship, fame and money). They do this pretending because they want SO BADLY to be liked. And like all such people, it makes us hate them. Ironically we'd probably be 90% less annoyed by them if they were just like "Yes, I am the shit, and you are not" and went about their lives with their noses in the air. As it is they go around just continually insulting our intelligence.

ETA ...Feel obligated to point out that I don't hate them - I think AH is (usually) a good and sometimes great actress, including during her big performance in Les Mis, including the singing which was IMO flawless.
