I like Miller's ideas about clothes and the lifeboat. It's also at least partly why travel is so exhausting: it's the sheer boredom and physical confinement, sure, but it's also the psychological stress of Being Seen continuously. You can't ever really relax because What Other People Think matters. You can't belch, yawn obnoxiously, do an Al Bundy slouch, etc. and it's that low-level but necessary unrelenting vigilance that wears us out.

It's a stunner in Cambridge today, folks. Brisk wind whipping the river into a light froth under a blazing Simpsons sky. Time to read under a tree some more.
